  • Shelby Thibodeaux, Director of JR. Golf & Teaching Pro

Shelby Thibodeaux, Director of Junior Golf & Teaching Professional

Since officially starting his teaching career at the famed Hank Haney Golf Ranch in Dallas, TX in 2016, Shelby Thibodeaux has already started making a name for himself. After getting his Associates Degree from the Golf Academy of America, he moved to Houston, TX to pursue his passion for teaching in one of the most prosperous golf communities in the country. Always wanting to learn and grow, Shelby has been mentored by some of the greatest (names) in the game such as Butch Harmon, Mike McGetrick, Marius Filmater, Kevin Kirk, Hank Haney, Steve Johnson, Steve Bowman, Matt Swanson and Jim Phenicie to name a few. He is currently the Director of Junior Golf and Teaching Professional at WindRose Golf Club. Since joining the club in fall 2018, Shelby created a junior program that grew from zero to 50(+) juniors in (less than) one year. In addition, He has grown the PGA Junior League Program from one to four teams, increased summer camp enrollment from six to 14 juniors/camp, taught over 850+ lessons and was named a 2019 Top 50 US Kids Golf Coach. He was a 2018 USKG Top 50 Honorable Mention. Having his focus on juniors, he teaches all ages and skill levels.

    Full Swing & Short Game
Shelby believes every swing is unique, and it is important to determine what each individual needs to play their best. Having a solid foundation is key to building the walls. With a complete understanding of the fundamentals and an analysis of your limitations, he then takes a deep dive into the mechanics of your swing. From there, he will instruct how your body and club should move throughout the swing, and apply drills to get you in the correct positions. He believes that correct repetition with less thought is vital to your improvement. You will be sent home with body rotation drills, swing drills and a personalized game plan so regardless of how busy you are, you can continue to progress. Shelby specializes in short game and makes it simple but very efficient. Being able to hit all three trajectories on command is a huge factor if you want to have a great short game. If your wedge game is good enough, then you putt less, leading to fewer strokes per hole. Every lesson will include video analysis with a summary for viewing at home.

    On-Course Management & Mental Game
Why am I unable to take my game from the range to the course? The question everyone asks. It is due mostly to a lack of understanding HOW to practice. Shelby believes practicing on the course is a must to gain the confidence and experience you need to get better. Offering on-course lessons, you will get a detailed look into what it takes to play this game to your fullest advantage. Having studied years on the mental game, Shelby understands how important it is. He explains golf as 70% mental and 30% physical, but yet we focus more on the 30% side than anything else. Without a strong mental game, you can only go so far. He believes everyone can be a player, you just have to pull it out of them. You will be tested each lesson to not only strengthen your mental game but learn how to coach yourself. Shelby is big on individual teaching so you know how to fix yourself outside of the lessons.
